Is a Plug-in Better than a Hybrid?

According to Ford's recent tweet, "The difference between a hybrid and a plug-in can be a game changer."

People love to throw around the term "game-changer," but what does it really mean? Is Ford just trying to get you to buy a more expensive product?

Full disclosure, we do like when you buy more expensive stuff, but we'll only push it when it really is better than the cheap option. In this case, Ford links to an infographic with all the key differences between the C-Max Hybrid and the C-Max Energi.

Think of a traditional hybrid as a hybrid cross between an electric car and a gas-powered car. Think of a plug-in hybrid like the C-Max Energi as a hybrid cross between an electric car and a traditional hybrid. Hybrid squared.

The C-Max Energi can be plugged in to a 240-volt charging station or a standard 120-volt outlet. It can then operate on battery power alone, acting like an all-electric model. You can make short trips without having to burn a single drop of gas.

When you need to make a longer trip, or you're traveling somewhere that doesn't have a charging station, the plug-in's gasoline engine gives you freedom and flexibility. You can set the C-Max Energi to drive in hybrid mode, or tell it to conserve electricity for later, and rely more heavily on the combustion engine.

Plug-in hybrids really are a game changer, giving you the environmental benefit of an electric car with the convenience and driving range of a hybrid. As the most versatile option, Ford expects customers to favor plug-ins in the coming years.
