Most university campuses these days have banned student groups from performing dangerous hazing rituals to initiate new members.
Unfortunately, it looks like Ford didn't get that memo... at least when it comes to their car seat material.
The Mace Snagging Test sounds a little crazy. Fabrics that Ford wants to use for seat covers in new vehicles are wrapped around a cylindrical spinner, and are beaten with a spiked ball-and-chain flail (colloquially called a mace) as they spin.
Cruel and unusual, no?
By dragging these miniaturized medieval weapons across the fabric's surface, Ford can check to make sure the fabric isn't snagging or tearing. Ford seat covers should be tough enough to withstand keys, pens, and other pointy objects to minimize wear-and-tear and enhance resale value.
